If you clicked on this post, I’m guessing you’re someone with a million different passions who gets SUPER excited about life and all the amazing parts of it. But because of that excitement, you’re probably also struggling to narrow down which career path you should choose, right?
Maybe you’ve got a notebook (or seventeen!) filled with hundreds of different career ideas – from becoming a death jeweler to being a policeman to trying your hand at graphic design. Sound familiar?
If you’re nodding along thinking “OMG yes, that’s totally me!” then you, my friend, are what we call multipassionate. And honestly? You’re in AMAZING company.
What Does Being Multipassionate Actually Mean?
So multipassionate isn’t really a word you’re gonna find in an old school dictionary (trust me, I’ve looked!), but it’s a term that’s becoming more and more widely accepted.
Basically, it means someone who has multiple passions and is interested in a LOT of different things.
Key characteristics of being multipassionate:
- You’re insatiably curious (like, seriously curious about EVERYTHING)
- You have a wide variety of interests
- You absolutely THRIVE on variety
- You struggle with choosing just one career path
- You feel frustrated by societal expectations
And here’s the thing that might be making you feel a bit bonkers… society values people who specialize.
As a multipassionate person, that can be really frustrating because you’re like, “I don’t wanna specialize in just one thing! I don’t wanna be just a math teacher for my whole life. That sounds kinda boring. There are so many cool things in the world and I wanna get to experience lots of these things, not just one!”
Can I get an amen?! 🙌
The Game-Changing Approach That Actually Works
Here’s my top tip, and it’s probably going to flip everything you’ve been told on its head…
Instead of feeling like you have to eliminate all of your passions except one in your career, I want you to think about how you can INTEGRATE your passions into one cohesive career.
How you can combine multiple passions into one career path that actually makes sense!
When you get to do this, you literally have the best of both worlds. You get to kind of specialize in a thing in your career (which is really good for earning potential), BUT you also get to bring in multiple different things that light you up.
Pretty cool, right? ✨
The Self-Discovery Process That Changes Everything
The way I recommend all of my clients approach this is by doing something called self-discovery.
Self-discovery is like putting all of the puzzle pieces on the table. You pull out all of your passions, all of the things you enjoy doing, all the skills that you’re good at, PLUS the lifestyle pieces (how do you actually want to live?), and parts of your personality that might impact your career.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Brainstorm These Four Categories
🔥 Things I Love – Your passions, what lights you up, what makes you feel alive
💪 Things I’m Good At – Skills (learned or natural) that you actually ENJOY doing. (Don’t bother putting spreadsheets in there if you freaking hate doing spreadsheets. I don’t want you to have a career in spreadsheets if you hate them!)
🏠 How I Want to Live – Are you desperate to work remote? Do you really wanna work around people and be energized in a team? Do you wanna make sure you have paid PTO, or do you want to be able to work from anywhere in the world? Super important stuff for a fulfilling career.
🌟 My Personality – Are you an introvert? Extroverted? Bubbly? Focused? This is gonna inform the kind of career you’re gonna thrive in.
Step 2: Pull Out Your Top 5-10 From Each Category
Once you’ve brainstormed (and I mean REALLY brainstormed – go wild!), look at your whole list and pull out the things that you love the most. The most important pieces from your self-discovery.
Step 3: Explore How to Combine Your Top Passions
This is where the magic happens! How could you combine your different passions to make you actually a really amazing fit in a certain role?
For example:
- If your top passions are the outdoor industry + designing products + solving problems = Maybe you could be a product designer in the outdoor industry!
- If you’re passionate about connecting with people + creativity + storytelling = Perhaps you could create a career as a creative marketer in an industry you really enjoy!
- If you’re really passionate about technology AND education = Maybe you could combine those to work in the ed tech industry!
The question is: How could you combine your different passions to make you an absolutely incredible fit for a role that doesn’t even exist yet?
What About Those “Leftover” Passions?
Now, for those passions that you weren’t able to fit into your cohesive career idea… here’s what I want you to ask yourself:
“Am I okay with that not being part of my career? Am I okay with exploring those passions in my personal life instead?”
For example, if you choose that outdoor product designer path, maybe that’s what you aim for in your career. And then in your personal life, maybe one of your other biggest passions is pottery or being physically active. So as part of your hobbies, you join a running club and you take pottery classes!
The key is allowing yourself to think BIG here. Go as big as you can. Combine things in the most creative way possible.
Your Next Steps (Because Ideas Without Action Are Just Dreams!)
If you actually connect with any of those career ideas you’ve created and you start to get really excited about them, then it’s time to go out in the world and start connecting with people. Start figuring out if you can actually make that career happen!
Remember, there are lots of different ways that you can run your career as a multipassionate person. The integration approach is my favorite way, but it’s not the only way.
The most important thing? You don’t have to choose just one passion and abandon all the others.
You get to be ALL of who you are. You get to honor your curiosity, your variety-loving nature, and your beautiful, complex, multipassionate self.
Because here’s what I know to be true: The world doesn’t need another cookie-cutter employee. It needs YOU – with all your weird, wonderful, multipassionate magic.
So go ahead, embrace those multiple passions. Combine them in ways that feel exciting and authentic to YOU. And create a career that makes you actually excited to wake up on Monday morning.
You’ve got this, gorgeous! 💕
